RAVENSWOOD Single Vineyard Pickberry Red Blend Sonoma Mountain 2012$0.00
Scents of dark cherry, dark berry, plum, mocha and vanilla aromas with intoxicating flavours of black plum, cassis, currants, spice and toast.
48% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cab Franc, 4% Petit Verdot
700 feet above the valley floor, Pickberry Vineyard soils are shallow volcanic ash. Combined with slightly cooler temperatures on the southeast-facing slopes, grape clusters tend to be small and crop levels low –about 2.5 tons per acre. In warmer years, the blend has more Cabernet Sauvignon; in cooler vintages, we lean toward Merlot. Following that formula, the 2012 Pickberry is a Pomerol style wine. A powerfully structured wine, with scents of dark cherry, dark berry, plum, mocha and vanilla aromas. With its complex, round layered texture, it coats the palate with intoxicating flavours of black plum, cassis, currants, spice and toast. This wine is built to last well into the next decade. Aged 18 months in 100% French oak, 40% new.
94 Points - Wine & Spirits, February 2016
A near-even blend of merlot and cabernet with some franc and verdot, this comes from a vineyard that winemaker Joel Peterson has worked with since 1986. Planted on the cool northeastern slope of Sonoma Mountain in rocky volcanic soil, it tends to grow a tense wine, and the moderate 2012 vintage played into the vineyard’s hands perfectly, creating a cabernet with a stony, sharply etched structure, racy brightness and pungent aromas of mint, black currant and violets. There’s an uncanny sense of purity here; hold onto this wine for another ten years or more.
